One dead, 7 injured as building collapses in Ebonyi

ONE person has been con­firmed dead and seven others critically injured when a sec­tion of a two-storey building collapsed in Abakaliki, Eb­onyi State capital.The incident, which took place at No 9A, Obiri street, Abakaliki, affected the bal­conies of the building, which caved in.
The victims were
radio apprentices of one Mr. Isaac and were working in a shop located at the front of the building when the tragedy occurred. One of the appren­tices was expected to be settled December this year while another is a newly reg­istered apprenticeship.
One of the victims was said to have died instantly while others were rushed to a private hospital, Holy Trinity Hospital and Maternity lo­cated within the area.
Daly Sun checks showed that other balconies around the building had started showing signs of collaps­ing as cracks were noticed on them.
The state Chief Inspec­tor of Council for the Regulation of Engineers in Nigeria (COREN), Mr. Amadi said the council had identified the remote and immediate causes of the incident.
